Working weekend

Posted by newlawmom on September 25, 2009

I went out today and bought my paper for outlines. It took me all year last year to figure out how to do it in a way that works for me.  Cardstock and colored pens are the appropriate answer. I handwrite because I feel disconnected when I enter stuff on the computer. Handwriting it is the best way for me.  I also handwrite class notes and exams for those who don’t know that already. Last year on our contracts exam I was surprised to see someone who had always typed her exams getting ready to handwrite one.  Her reasoning? I feel disconnected when I try to write on the computer and I think this might work better. So I’m not the only one who has this strange disconnect going on. That makes me feel better. I love pens and paper and notebooks. Outside of law school I keep a handwritten journal, I write letters on stationery, and I keep notebooks for lots of things. I don’t think the computer will ever be my tool of choice. Although I am addicted to the internet…

So…I am starting my outlines this weekend. They are being done on colored cardstock in colored ink. I don’t really care how people think I should make an outline. I don’t care. I am not joining any study groups. I am not asking anyone for advice. I am going my own way.  At least when all is said and done I will know it was my own doing. I’ll write again on Monday.

Reading Week Day 1

Posted by newlawmom on December 1, 2008

Well, I’ve been back to work since yesterday afternoon. Today was the first official day of reading week. I spent my day attending a Torts review session, a contract study group meeting, and a meeting with the contracts prof. Tonight I am working on the Contracts outline. I will study contracts until 12 or 1 in the morning and call it a day. Tomorrow I will not be going to school, but will study Civil Procedure all day and well into the night, working on the outline, re-reading cases, and also checking in with the Nutshell and the Glannon Examples and Explanations book. I hope all my fellow 1L’s are feeling prepared and get the opportunity to study to their heart’s content. Have a great day.

It is hard to decide what to do with my time right now. I am getting ready to study but can’t decide which class gets my attention this evening. Nothing is pressing, but it all needs to be done. I have found that a lengthy study session devoted to one subject is more effective than dividing time into smaller chunks. I have three to four hours to work with. I am leaning towards applying myself to Criminal Law for tonight. I had a great weekend. Spent several hours on school. Cleaned my house for a few hours. And managed to get out to buy Halloween costumes and winter coats for the children. I can’t believe November is right around the corner. Anyway – I need to get busy. I hope all my readers have a lovely day.

Six weeks in

Posted by newlawmom on September 26, 2008

It’s hard to believe another week is over. Today I was called on for my first socratic encounter! I had read the material so I was a little surprised to feel the anxiety creeping in to grab my tongue. All in all, it went fine. I am glad to have it over with.  Most of my profs seem to use a combination of the socratic method and lecture. I find that to be a good mix. I have discovered gunners and have felt bored in class while listening to questions and answers that have virtually nothing to do with exam material. I have taken my first timed anonymous exam, posited as a quiz, and left feeling completely confident that I got it right. We’ll see when I get it back, I guess. I continue to work on mastering the art of legal predictive memo writing and can see myself getting better week by week. I did book research in the library and found the case I was looking for with minimal problems. I have started my research for the writing competition and feel like I have a good outline in my mind. Over the weekend I will try to get that down on paper. Also over the weekend I will be working on outlines. Basically, it is raining here and I will be studying all weekend long. On the agenda for next week: official Westlaw training, a sample Torts exam, getting the most recent legal writing assignment returned, working on the writing competition paper, and diligently completing my reading assignments. Oh yeah – I am also meeting with the contracts prof to review our outline and discussing starting a parents group with a fellow student. So it should be fun. I hope all my readers have a lovely weekend.

I can’t believe the week is already half over! I must be getting better at this. So…I am going to enter the writing competition that I mentioned a few posts back. This follows a conversation with the Dean and asking the legal skills instructor for his opinion on it. I am really excited about it, so excited that I was five minutes late for my contracts class today. Talk about shooting myself in the foot. I got so engrossed in picking a topic that I totally lost track of time. From now on I will need to set an alarm. The good news is that I only lose track of time when I am really interested in something. Unfortunately I am not losing track of time during classes or during the reading. Perhaps a writing contest is just what I need. Is it manageable? For right now, yes. But it will be tempting to put more effort into the writing than into my classes and I need to avoid that at all costs. I did stay after school today to work on my contracts outline. Torts and Civ Pro outlines are fully up to date, and Criminal is tonight’s project. I am fully prepared for tomorrows classes and will have plenty of time tomorrow to do the reading for Friday. So…I am happily busy. I hope all my readers have a splendid day.
